Deadly Shootings Could Lead to Security Cameras on East Bay Freeway

The Pittsburg City Council will vote on Monday whether to install security cameras along a stretch of Highway 4, where several deadly shootings have taken place over the last few months.

The city is considering spending upwards of $100,000 on security camera equipment.

The shootings have seemingly been random, making residents and commuters fearful and nervous about traveling on the busy stretch of road. The shootings most recent victim is 25-year-old Shanique Marie, a mother of four.

William Lee, another Pittsburg resident, said he hopes that the cameras would identify the shooters so they could be brought to justice.

"It’s scary," Pittsburg resident James Rand said. “You never know a stray bullet can hit an innocent person. I think (video cameras) would definitely help the neighborhood out and crack down on all this violence that’s happening out here.”

Pittsburg Mayor Ben Johnson told NBC Bay Area that cameras would be a “positive thing” that would help authorities identify the shooter or shooters.

William Lee, another Pittsburg resident, said he hopes that the cameras would identify the shooters so they could be brought to justice.

There have been a slew of shootings on highways in the recent months, puzzling officers. California Highway Patrol says there were “at least” 20 shootings on East Bay freeways since November.

Investigators have said that most of the shootings appear to be gang related.
