Rain is On the Way to the Bay Area Through the Weekend

Time to dig out the umbrellas and rain gear.

Scattered rain is possible overnight and Friday morning amid mostly cloudy skies across the Bay Area, according to weather forecasters.

A weak weather system approaching from the southwest may produce areas of light rain beginning late Thursday night, then a cold front approaching from the northwest will generate more widespread rainfall from Friday afternoon into Saturday, with most rain expected Friday night, the National Weather Service said.

The rain likely will break Saturday night, and a second system possibly will drop more rain in the region late Sunday night, forecasters said.

It will be the first significant rainfall of the season in the Bay Area that will also bring snow to higher elevations in the Sierra Nevada.

Temperatures will be slightly cooler Friday, and that trend continues into the weekend, forecasters said.

In San Jose, new protections are on the way for the residents whose homes were hit by the devastating floods in February.

The Santa Clara Valley Water District is installing temporary beams that would protect homes in the Rock Springs neighborhood if Coyote Creek overflows again.

Dirt and a vinyl barriers up to 5 feet high are being installed, scheduled to be completed by Thanksgiving.
