San Jose City Council to Consider Local Immigration Office: Report

The San Jose City Council is considering a proposal to create a local Office of Immigration Services, according to San Jose Inside.

The proposals comes as more work permits and deportation amnesty are coming in for processing due to a recent Obama Administration change.

Under Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, about two million undocumented immigrants who arrived in the country either before their 16th birthday or before 2010 are eligible for "work permits and deportation relief," according to the report.

The local office could process those work permits.

City leaders are also mulling a "welcome ordinance" that would inform local immigrant residents of services available.
