Tacoma Truck Takes Final Bow In Fremont

It was a sad day for NUMMI workers in Fremont.  The final Tacoma truck rolled off the assembly line.

"What can you do when someone tells you to get out? You can't do nothing but just get out," Greg Conner said.

Greg Conner worked for NUMMI for 17 years.  His last day will be next Tuesday.

Toyota has said in the past it had no choice but to abandon NUMMI after General Motors pulled out last year.

After months of tough negotiations, Toyota agreed to fund $278 million severance package for the plant's 47-hundred employees.

Some 1,700 people have signed up for retraining.

Several hundred people got together at City Beach in Fremont to say good-bye to one another.

"It was good while it lasted.  Now it's time to move on," NUMMI plant work George Hallow said.
