U.S. Immigration Official Sentenced for Fraud in SF

A U.S. immigration official in San Francisco convicted of accepting kickbacks in exchange for passing candidates on their citizenship tests is headed to prison.

Abdulaziz Khalil is expected to begin serving his 38-month prison sentence in August. A judge handed down the sentence on Tuesday.

Khalil was a District Adjudication Officer with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service. Federal prosecutors say from 2003 through 2008 he recruited applicants for U.S. citizenship and took money from them in exchange for assurances that they would pass required citizenship tests.

Applicants had to demonstrate knowledge of English and the U.S. Constitution.

Khalil pleaded guilty in February to attempted unlawful procurement of citizenship, false certification of citizenship applications and attempted witness tampering.
