Fire Breaks Out at Abandoned Military Building on Mare Island in Vallejo

Police said the fire was not believed to be related to Sunday's 6.0-magnitude quake or aftershocks

Firefighters quickly extinguished a fire in an abandoned military building on Mare Island in Vallejo Tuesday morning, fire officials said. The one-alarm fire was reported near Azuar Drive and G Street at about 8:45 a.m., fire officials said.

The abandoned concrete building had no power or other utilities running. While the shell is concrete, there was flammable material inside that went up in flames, fire officials said. Less than 25 percent of the building burned before firefighters extinguished the blaze, according to the fire department.

Fire officials said it is not yet clear what started the fire, but it could have been squatters staying there, as was suspected in a four-alarm fire that destroyed abandoned barracks in the 400 block of Azuar Drive on Aug. 10.Firefighters said they are looking into that possibility as there was no obvious ignition source for today's fire.

No injuries were reported in the blaze.

Vallejo police Lt. Sid DeJesus said the blaze was not believed to be related to Sunday's 6.0-magnitude earthquake or subsequent aftershocks.
