Walmart Plans New Grocery Stores in San Jose

Two -- and possibly three -- neighborhood markets for Walmart in San Jose.

Megaretailer Walmart is planning a pair of new "neighborhood markets" that specialize in food sales in "under-retailed" San Jose, according to reports.

The Arkansas company is planning stores in new shopping center just south of downtown on Monterey Highway and in an old Circuit City location Stevens Creek near the Westfield Valley Mall, the Oakland Tribune reported.

The two stores promise "200 jobs" for the "under-retailed" South Bay city, according to Nanci Klein, deputy director of San Jose's Economic Development Department.

Two Wal-Marts recently opened in San Jose, in West San Jose at the Westgate Mall and in the Evergreen area in southeast San Jose.

The new stores should be open by September 2014, the newspaper reported.

There were also unconfirmed reports of another Walmart opening at the Sun Garden site near Southern Lumber.
