Supporters of Data Privacy Measure Submit Signatures for November Ballot

Supporters of an initiative aimed at giving consumers more control over their personal data say they have collected enough signatures to qualify for the November ballot.

Proponents of the measure said Thursday they have submitted 625,000 signatures. The initiative will go before voters in November if the secretary of state certifies enough of the signatures submitted are valid.

The measure would allow consumers to bar companies like Facebook from selling their personal information. It would also require companies to tell consumers what types of personal information they collect and whether they've sold it.

Opponents argue the measure would create different standards for companies in California and could limit residents' choices.

Google, Comcast and other companies are spending money to oppose the measure.
