Crash Involving Inmate Transport Bus Snarls Traffic on I-880 in San Jose

A fiery wreck involving five vehicles, including an inmate transport bus, snarled traffic on southbound Interstate 880 near Brokaw Road in San Jose Thursday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol and Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office.

The crash, which was reported at 7:24 a.m., temporarily blocked all southbound lanes and then three out of four lanes of the busy South Bay thoroughfare, according to the CHP. All lanes reopened around 9 a.m.

Based on a preliminary investigation, a Toyota Prius trying to change lanes slammed into the back of a Toyota RAV4, according to the CHP. The Prius spun out of control and hit the transport bus traveling in the fast lane before catching on fire. The RAV4 hit two other vehicles.

Five inmates on the transport bus were taken to the hospital with minor injuries, according to the CHP. Two sheriff's deputies also suffered minor injuries, but they were not taken to the hospital. No other injuries were reported.

The crash remains under investigation.
