Oakland Records 9 Homicides in Over a Week. Here's What Police Are Doing in Response to the Violence

NBC Universal, Inc.

At least one person died when two were shot Tuesday morning in the Brookfield Village neighborhood in East Oakland, police said.

The deadly shooting marked the city's ninth homicide in just over a week.

Tuesday's shooting occurred shortly after 10 a.m. in the 9600 block of Edes Avenue. Two men were shot, with one of them succumbing to their wounds. Police are still looking for the shooter and a motive.

"This is all hands on deck in order to reduce the loss of life in the city of Oakland," Oakland Police Chief LeRonne Armstrong said.

It’s been the deadliest week in Oakland so far this year and police are now calling in more help amid skyrocketing gun violence. NBC Bay Area’s Audrey Asistio spoke to Velena Jones, who has been following the latest crimes, for some insight.

Despite the recent spike in violence, Armstrong said overall homicides are down and more weapons are being taken off the street. But the chief said the recent violence needs to be stopped in its tracks.

Armstrong as a response said more police patrols will deployed in East and West Oakland, where he believes gangs are fueling the rise in gun crime.

"There is only a small group of people that are driving violence in the city of Oakland, but these individuals are active and we need to identify them," Armstrong said. "And we need the communities' help to bring them forward."

Officers are also rotating overtime shifts and additional units are being sent to the department's criminal investigation division in an effort to close more cases. The Oakland Police Department will also restart its traffic enforcement unit and work with federal and local law enforcement to increase joint efforts to get guns off the street.

"Every resource that we can utilize will be utilized," Armstrong said. "I am worried about officer fatigue, but I'm also worried about safety in our community."
