4 Dead After SUV Plunges Off Carquinez Bridge: CHP

NBC Universal, Inc.

Four people died Tuesday night when the SUV they were in plunged off the Carquinez Bridge in Crockett, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred at around 8:40 p.m. on eastbound Interstate 80 just east of the Pomona Street off-ramp, the CHP said.

The CHP said the driver lost control, veered across all lanes of traffic and slammed into a concrete barrier wall before the SUV plunged off the bridge and struck a stationary freight train below. An investigation into what caused the driver to lose control is underway.

All four people were pronounced dead at the scene, and no other injuries were reported, officials said.

The victims were identified as Perla Navarro, 19, of Richmond, Kyle Erickson, 19, of Pittsburg, and Christopher Mata, 21, of Rodeo. The fourth victim has not been identified.

It is not known at this time if alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash.
