Famed Marin Theatre Hold Two Obama Events

Mill Valley's popular 142 Throckmorton Theatre that is used by famous Marin County comedians Robin Williams and Dana Carvey is celebrating two inaugural events Tuesday.

The public is invited to witness the 9 a.m. inauguration of President-elect Barack Obama on Tuesday on a big-screen television. Doors open at 8:30 a.m.

The theatre also is holding an inaugural ball Tuesday evening that will not only celebrate the beginning of the new president's term but will double as a fundraising event for the theatre that is in its "inaugural" year  as a nonprofit organization.

The evening will include full-screen coverage of many inaugural celebrations the president and first lady will be attending and a special taped performance from the late singer Odetta, the voice of the civil rights  movement, who died Dec. 2.

One of Odetta's last performances was at 142 Throckmorton Theatre last summer and her heartfelt wish was to perform at Obama's inauguration.

The 7 p.m. ball will include hors d'oeuvres, desserts, wine and a live dance band. Tickets are $75.

Serene Buckley, spokeswoman for the theatre, said the venue is celebrating its first year as a nonprofit that raises money for the arts in  the county. The theater has a $500,000 annual budget. Students perform plays  on the same stage used by the famous comedians.

"Individuals, families, and a beloved nonprofit rally together to bring positivity back during bleak times. It's a celebration," Buckley said.
