Firefighters Rescue 2 Deer Stuck in Fence in Oakland; 1 Dies

Firefighters rescued a pair of young deer in the Oakland hills Wednesday morning after the animals got stuck in a wrought iron fence, but one of the deer later died, according to fire department officials.

The rescue, first reported by the East Bay Times, occurred just before 10 a.m. at a home on Campus Drive, near Merritt College. The two fawns, one male and one female, were stuck in separate sections of the fence, the newspaper reported.

Responding firefighters used the Jaws of Life to extricate the animals.

After consulting with wildlife officials, animal control officers determined the male deer was not badly injured, and they let him run off into the brush after he was freed, according to the Times.

The female deer succumbed to her injuries.
