Flooding Forces Closure of Oakland Coliseum DMV Office

Flooding and roof damage forced officials to close the Oakland Coliseum Department of Motor Vehicles office Wednesday, according to a spokesperson.

Officials said the flooding was caused by copper thieves stealing wire from the rooftop. Police said thieves scaled the roof Tuesday night and pulled copper piping out of an HVAC unit on the roof, triggering a leak.

The office located at 501 85th Ave. is estimated to reopen Monday.

CHP Officer Sean Wilkenfeld said the thieves took about $50 worth of copper.

The flooding was spotted Wednesday morning when employees arrived for work, the spokesperson said.

Footage from the scene captured water leaking out of doors at the office and into the parking lot. A large puddle inside the building was cluttered with fallen ceiling tiles.

The DMV will still honor scheduled appointments at nearby field offices, according to the spokesperson.

People are encouraged to visit nearby DMV locations in Oakland (5300 Claremont Ave.), Hayward (150 Jackson St.), San Mateo (425 N. Amphlett Blvd.), Walnut Creek (1910 N. Broadway) and San Francisco (1377 Fell St.).
