The U.S. Postal Service's honor to America's first gay politician is no honor at all for the American Family Institute.
The incendiary anti-gay group, which is classified as a "hate group" by the Southern Poverty Law Center, issued a press release this week urging Americans to reject mail with a "return to sender" note if it bears the stamp issued to honor slain San Francisco supervisor Harvey Milk, according to SFist.
Putting the image of Milk, who is celebrated as a hero in San Francisco and in LGBT circles, on U.S. stamps is "perversity," the group says.
The group claims that Milk engaged in "adult-child sex" and was also a homosexual polygamist, charges that do not appear to be based in fact.
The group also says that Milk was honored by USPS at the behest "of a drag queen," a reference to Nicole Murray Ramirez.
