Two officers were taken to a hospital after being exposed to suspected fentanyl in San Ramon, police said.

The Wednesday morning incident also prompted a hazardous materials investigation in a Safeway parking lot at the Diablo Plaza shopping center on San Ramon Valley Boulevard and just west of Interstate 680.

The officers initially responded at 11 a.m. to a call of a person reportedly passed out inside a vehicle at the plaza. When they arrived on scene, they saw suspected narcotics in the vehicle, police said. Two people inside the vehicle were arrested for multiple charges, including possession of narcotics, possession of a loaded firearm without a serial number, and possession of drug paraphernalia, police said.

The officers later began to feel effects of what is suspected to be fentanyl found in the vehicle and were taken to a hospital.
