An inmate was severely injured in a violent attack inside the Santa Clara County Main Jail over the weekend, according to the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office.

At least two inmates attacked another inmate about 9 a.m. Sunday, stabbing him more than 20 times with homemade shanks in a common area of the jail, sheriff's officials said. The shanks bent, and that possibly saved the man's life.

The inmate suffered multiple puncture and laceration wounds to his head, neck and back and was treated at a local hospital then returned to custody, sheriff's officials said. Someof the wounds requires staples and stitches.

The two suspected inmates were arrested. Both were in jail for violent crimes, sheriff's officials said.
