It's Official: Fewer Freshmen

The University of California has reached its goal of reducing freshman enrollment this fall.
UC data released Tuesday shows that nearly 34,300 California freshmen intend to enroll at UC's nine undergraduate campuses in the 2009-10 academic year -- about 2,400 fewer than last year.
Earlier this year, UC regents approved a plan to reduce freshman enrollment by 6 percent -- or 2,300 students -- in response to state budget cuts.

The number of freshmen planning to enroll fell at five UC campuses, but rose slightly at the Berkeley, Riverside and Santa Barbara campuses.

Freshman enrollment at four-year-old UC Merced, the system's smallest campus, is set to rise 28 percent to 1,341 students.
