Man Shot While Helping Oakland Homeless Dies

Mom, dad and child struck by bullets overnight Wednesday in Oakland.

Sad news from Oakland Thursday. A man who was shot while feeding the homeless overnight Tuesday has died.

Oakland police said Paris Powell died at 10:25 p.m. Wednesday.

Powell was with his wife and two young children handing out food to the homeless when someone drove up along side their family van and opened fire.

Powell, his wife and his 3-year-old stepdaughter were all hit. The woman and child suffered non-life threatening wounds. But Powell's 35-year-old is pregnant with their child, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Powell lived in East Oakland and often handed out food at night. People who know the family said most of the time he goes out alone on these kind of trips, but this week he had his wife and two children with him.

Police do not have a motive for the shooting, nor any suspects.

Anyone with information about the shooting is encouraged to call the Police Department's homicide  section at (510) 238-3821 or email oaklandhomicide@oaklandnet.com.

NBC Bay Area reporter Jodi Hernandez talked to people who knew the man known as "Brother John."
