No Guts, No Worries: Crab Meat Safe, But Health Officials Urge People to Avoid Eating Guts

Last year, the Dungeness crab season was delayed four months due to high levels of domoic acid found in the crabs caused by an algae bloom.

At $6 a pound, fishermen are happy to be making money during the holiday season this year.

"It's been hard on a lot of people," said Rob Kraencke, a crab fisherman. "They are good and heavy. Full of meat, which is a good sign."

Health officials said the crab meat is safe, but urge people not to eat the guts of the crab where there could be slight traces of domoic acid.

Health officials also urge people to not use the boiling water for any sauces as a precaution.
