California City Looking for the Best of the Breast(feeders)

Usually when you see a mother breastfeeding her baby in public, you probably look away. But health officials in a North Bay county are now asking people to do the opposite in the name of art.

The Sonoma County Department of Public Health is requesting people to take pictures of moms and their suckling infants as part of the annual "Positive Images of Breastfeeding" photography contest.

Other than perhaps the oddity of the subject itself, there should be no surprises in this contest -- both the nursing mother and person taking the picture must sign a consent form as part of the entry and moms must have a Sonoma County address.

The categories for this year's contest are Breastfeeding in Public and Breastfeeding for the Joy of It. Entries are being accepted through July 24.

The judges will decide on winners on Aug. 5 and award a mom from each category $100 from the Sonoma County Breastfeeding Coalition. Their photos will be displayed at that day at the Wednesday Night Market in Santa Rosa.

The contest is part of World Breastfeeding Week Aug. 1-7, which aims to spread the word about how vital breastfeeding is for emergency preparedness.
