A preliminary 5.1 magnitude earthquake struck just before 11:50 p.m. Saturday near Petrolia in Humboldt County, according to the United States Geological Survey.
It was centered 22 miles southwest of Ferndale, 28 miles miles south-south-west of Eureka and 26.9 miles southwest of Fortuna.
No other details were released.
