Pyramid Alehouse in Berkeley Shuts Down After 18 Years

The popular Pyramid Alehouse in Berkeley is shutting down after 18 years.

Pyramid first opened in West Berkeley on Gilman St. in 1997 and instantly became a community favorite. The unexpected closing came as a shock to many, as the alehouse's Facebook page remained active up until last week.

North American Breweries released a statement Tuesday saying that after an “extensive evaluation process” the Berkeley location has closed in order to prepare the building to be sold.

“We have made the decision to focus our West Coast production in our Portland, Oregon and Seattle, Washington locations,” CEO of North American Breweries Kris Sirchio said in the statement.

Sirchio adds that by investing more time in the Oregon and Washington locations,  the company is "better positioned to accelerate innovation, increase capacity, and improve packing capabilities,” which will help them “become more competitive in the marketplace.”

The brewery’s website and answering machine message states, “Thank you so much for your support and patronage over the years! We also want to thank our employees for their dedicated service.”

Pyramid’s Walnut Creek location will still remain open in addition to all other North American Breweries and alehouse locations.
