Two Dead After Car Slams Into San Jose Sound Wall, Ignites Blaze

Two people died early Sunday morning in San Jose after the vehicle they were riding in smashed into a sound wall, causing flames to engulf the vehicle.

The 4-door sedan clipped the center divide on South Capitol Avenue around 4 a.m. before crashing head on into the wall located on Capitol Expressway, police said. An inferno immediately consumed the vehicle, killing two occupants inside before crews could make a rescue attemp.

Christian Cuevas, a nearby resident who was awake at the time of the crash, said the collision jolted him.

"The impact sounded pretty loud, like is was next to my house," he said.

The fiery wreck prompted several street closures in the area while crews doused the flames and investigated the cause of the wreck.

Sunday's crash marks the city's 44th deadly traffic collision of 2016, police said. Just hours before the double-fatal wreck, a driver of a stolen vehicle struck a light pole and died.

Anyone with information pertaining to Sunday's crash is asked to contact Detective Kevin McMillin of the San Jose Police Department's Traffic Investigations Unit at 408-277-4654.
