San Francisco police are investigating a fatal shooting on the Embarcadero.
Police said at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday night a woman visiting the city with her family from Pleasanton was shot by a man at Pier 14 and near the Ferry Building. She was transported to a hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries, police said.
The victim was identified Thursday by the medical examiner’s office as Katheryn Steinle, 32, of San Francisco. It appears Steinle may have grown up in Pleasanton and since relocated to the city.
Police said the shooting appears to be a random attack.
Officers said they took a person matching a suspect description into custody at the corner of Embarcadero and Townsend Street.
No other information was immediately available late Wednesday.
