Delayed Hearing for Shackled Teen Suspects

The arraignments of four people accused of torturing a teenage boy will take place April 1 after a judge delayed the hearing because of work the district attorney still needs to perform.

Defendants Caren Ramirez, Michael Schumacher, Kelly Layne Lau and Anthony Waiters appeared Monday in the San Joaquin County Superior courtroom of Judge Cinda Fox.

A court spokeswoman said none of the defendants entered a plea as scheduled Monday because the prosecutor is still working on discovery issues.

Authorities say the 16-year-old boy was shackled at the Tracy home of his former guardians Schumacher and Lau. He was beaten, given drugs and denied food. He escaped in December and remains in protective custody.
