Police Shooting Under Investigation in Milpitas

Authorities are investigating a police shooting that injured a man in Milpitas Friday afternoon.

Just after 3:30 p.m., officers were trying to stop a man in a stolen car parked outside of the Milpitas Square shopping center on McCarthy Boulevard and Bellew Drive, near the Interstate 880 and Highway 237 interchange, police said.

The suspect then began firing at the officers, resulting in a prolonged exchange of gunfire, police said.

According to officials, the man sustained injuries and barricaded himself in his vehicle.

The suspect was extricated from the car and was later transported to a local hospital for treatment, officials said. The suspect’s gun was recovered from the scene, police said, and there was no threat to public safety.

The officers involved in the shooting were not injured, and no bystanders were hurt.

Police said the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office was assisting in the investigation.
