Construction is beginning on a new Stanford University concert hall designed to host everything from small chamber ensembles to full-sized orchestras.
The groundbreaking ceremony for Bing Concert Hall was held Tuesday. The 844-seat hall is expected to be completed by 2012, with the first performances scheduled for January 2013.
Named after supporters Helen and Peter Bing, the hall was designed by Polshek Partnership Architects, who also designed Carnegie Hall.
The acoustic design was by Nagata Acoustics' Yasuhisa Toyota, whose projects included the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles and Russia's Mariinsky Concert Hall in St. Petersburg.
