Stray Bullet Strikes Fisherman

Fisherman left with cut to head.

A fisherman casting his line on San Pablo Bay Sunday evening ended  up spending the night in the hospital after being grazed by a stray bullet  from a drive-by shooting nearly a quarter mile away, according to the Contra  Costa County Sheriff's Office.
Sheriff's spokesman Jimmy Lee said emergency dispatchers received  "numerous" 911 calls about a shooting in Rodeo at about 6:45 p.m. Later calls  indicated some vehicles were involved, he said.
At the corner of California Street and San Pablo Avenue, deputies  found a bullet-riddled vehicle, which had failed to navigate a turn, crashing  through the center median and a fence, Lee said.
The vehicle's occupants had escaped harm despite being shot at by  suspects in a pursuing vehicle. Lee said those suspects got away.
"During the middle of all this, we got a call that someone had  been shot," he said.
The 34-year-old Richmond fisherman spent the night at John Muir  Medical Center in Walnut Creek and was released Monday, according to Lee.
"Obviously, it could have turned out tragically, but we're  fortunate that it didn't," Lee said.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact the  sheriff's office at (925) 313-2600.
