Silicon Valley Tech Bus Drivers Ratify Contract with Higher Pay, Affordable Benefits

The holidays just got a whole lot merrier for Bay Area tech shuttle drivers.

Drivers who work for Compass Transportation and operate the shuttle buses for Apple, Yahoo, eBay and several other companies finalized their new contract on Sunday.

The three-year contract calls for 10 paid holidays, including Thanksgiving, affordable benefits, nine days of sick leave.

But, more importantly, Sunday’s vote comes with a big raise. Drivers will earn between $24 and $31.50 an hour. They had been making as little as $17 an hour before they organized into a union.

"This is another big step in bringing middle class wages and benefits to this industry," said Rome Aloise, president of Teamsters Joint Council 7.

In a statement, Aloise called Sunday’s deal "a life-changing contract."
