Teenage Girl Killed in Oakland Shooting

A woman has been detained for questioning in connection with the  shooting death of a teenage girl early Thursday morning in Oakland, police Sgt. Richard Vierra said.

The shooting happened at about 1:30 a.m. in front of an apartment complex on the corner of 64th Avenue and MacArthur Boulevard, Vierra said.

The victim was taken to Highland Hospital where she later died. The girl's name has not been released but the Alameda County Coroner's Bureau reports that she was 15 years old.

Vierra said it appears the girl was the intended target, but the motive remains under investigation. The preliminary investigation indicates the shooter was a woman, he said.

He said the woman who has been detained is being questioned at the police station but has not yet been arrested.

Oakland Unified School District spokesman Troy Flint said the girl had registered for classes at Oakland High School in March 2008, but only  attended class for a few months and did not register for the next semester.

Flint said those few months are the only record he has of her attending a school in the district.
