UC Berkeley officials have distanced the school from two fake "White Student Union" pages posted to — and later removed from — Facebook.
In a letter posted to the school's Berkeley Diversity page, Chancellor Nicholas B. Dirks and Vice Chancellor for Equity and Inclusion Na'ilah Suad Nasir wrote, "While UC Berkeley honors First Amendment rights, we do not endorse this attempt to create conflict and make light of the efforts of activists, locally and nationally, who have worked hard to hold us all accountable for providing a campus climate where every student is safe, welcomed and respected."
According to The Daily Californian, the first of two fake Facebook pages described the White Student Union as a group that would "unapologetically provide a safe space for white students to air their true feelings [about the] challenges European-American students on college campuses face."
The College Fix reported that at least 33 more White Student Union Facebook pages have been created across the country in the past week, including one at Stanford University.
