Wondering when the red traffic light will turn green? For drivers in Walnut Creek, there is now an app for that.
City officials said the system, called "Enlighten," aims to give drivers another heads up.
The city stressed the app-based technology it requires no driver-involvement, but some said it is just another driving distraction.
Rafat Raie, a traffic engineer for Walnut Creek, said the system includes cameras and ability to control the timing of traffic lights at intersections.
City officials consider the new system a small step toward a broader idea to some day connect drivers and their cars with a network that could improve safety and traffic flow.
