After seven decades, Vallejo High School has a new mascot. No longer the Vallejo Apaches, it's now the Vallejo Red Hawks.
The decision was announced late Wednesday afternoon after a school board vote.
Since the 1930s, the school's sports teams have been "the Apaches", but cultural sensitivity prompted the school board to retire the name last November.

Students and alumni defended the Apaches mascot as an honor to the tribe and the Vallejo High spirit.
The school will keep its trademark red and white colors.
