The space agency is hiring a Planetary Protection Officer who will be tasked with ensuring the safety of space missions that may carry Earth organisms to other planets or solar system bodies, and vice versa – missions that may return to Earth "with samples from extraterrestrial targets of exploration."

According to the job posting, the Planetary Protection Officer will prevent "organic-constituent and biological contamination" during space missions.

The role includes planning and coordinating of activities related to NASA mission planetary protection needs.

The job has a six-figure starting salary at $124,406 to $187,000, according to the posting. Candidates must be U.S. citizens or U.S. nationals, and the security clearance is listed as "secret."
