Google Moves Into Home Security

Google is reportedly in talks to buy cloud video startup Dropcam to add home security cameras to its smart home system Nest.

Google bought Nest for $3.2. billion, but adding security video would only strengthen the its offerings, according to The Verge. The acquisition, if it occurs, would make Nest increasingly more competitive, especially since Apple is expected to debut its smart home system at its Worldwide Developers Conference next week.

Google bought Nest Labs earlier this year after being an investor. The home system controls themostats, smoke alarms and others, and sounds emergencies with a calmer human voice. Dropcam, which sends video to the cloud to be viewed later, could be added to give the system home surveillance. Details about the talks were murky, including if they were culminating into a deal.

The new Apple smart home software will be added to its iOS system and already has a security system, so Google has to have something like it to compete in the market.
