A's go North to Acquire Back up Catcher

The Oakland Athletics added depth at catcher, acquiring Curtis Thigpen from the Toronto Blue Jays and signing Eric Munson to a minor league contract.

Both catchers were brought in Friday in case projected major league backup Landon Powell gets hurt. Powell has been out this week with a sore ribcage muscle, but he was expected to be able to play this weekend.

Thigpen was acquired for a player to be named or cash. He was hitting .148 in 14 games with the Blue Jays this spring. Thigpen has hit .229 in 57 major league games in 2007 and '08 with Toronto.

The 31-year-old Munson was out of baseball until the A's signed him. He is a .214 hitter in 360 games from 2000-07. He spent last season at Triple-A Nashville, in the Milwaukee system.
