49ers CB Ward Sustains Concussion in Loss to Patriots

SANTA CLARA – Cornerback Jimmie Ward was diagnosed with a concussion late in the 49ers’ 30-17 loss to the New England Patriots on Sunday, the team announced.

Ward was injured while tackling Patriots receiver Julian Edelman on a 7-yard gain. He returned to the locker room, where he underwent further evaluation that determined he sustained a concussion.

Ward must now pass the NFL’s concussion protocol in order to return to practice and be eligible to play in the 49ers’ game next Sunday against the Miami Dolphins.

Also, free safety Eric Reid was undergoing further observation from the 49ers medical staff on a right arm injury he sustained late in the game.
