How Raiders Center Erik Magnuson Got His Nickname From Jimmy Garoppolo

ALAMEDA -- If you were to hear Erik Magnuson's nickname, you'd probably think he has a contract the size of the one Trent Brown signed with the Raiders this offseason.

After all, people aren't called "Money Bags" unless their garage is stocked with sports cars and they fly private everywhere, right?

Not if Jimmy Garoppolo is the one creating your nickname.

Magnuson, who the Raiders signed off the Bills' practice squad Tuesday, spent the first two seasons of his NFL career with the 49ers, starting three games over the course of two years in Santa Clara before being waived prior to the start of this season.

"The nickname, created by former quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, started called me Money Bags Mags," Magnuson told the media Wednesday. "I was in the offensive line room where I was making the least amount of money, playing the most positions, so he started calling me Money Bags Mags. But it has no reflection of my actual, financial well being."

Laugh it up, Jimmy G.

Magnuson joins the Raiders at a time when both centers Rodney Hudson and Andre James are dealing with ankle injuries. That has moved left guard Richie Incognito over to center, for the moment, and forced Magnuson to get up to speed quickly should he be needed Sunday when the Raiders face the Lions.

Can Money Bags Mags step up if called upon Sunday and protect quarterback Derek Carr?

"It's a lot of information," Magnuson said of learning an offense in a few days. "I've played in six different systems, maybe seven now including college. So there is overlap, I mean, The West Coast system, is the West Coast system. The only thing is what do you call this block versus this block. Everyone has different terminology, once you get the overall understanding of how the play works -- run scheme or pass scheme -- you start to pick it up."

Jon Gruden certainly hopes he can take that to the bank.
