Shortly after he heard his name called on Day 2 of 2022 NFL Draft, defensive end Drake Jackson got a text from a prominent new teammate.

Nick Bosa, who led the 49ers with 19.5 sacks in 20 games last season, reached out to the team’s second-round draft pick.

“He said, ‘Hey, what’s up, man? Welcome to to the squad,’” Jackson told the media last week in Santa Clara, where the newcomers gathered for the annual 49ers rookie camp.

“Watching him, the whole D-line, watching them hunt, I cannot wait to get out there with those guys and turn up with them.”

Jackson was asked to fulfill a lot of different duties during his three-year career at USC. He started out as a 275-pound lineman before dropping 35 pounds to play outside linebacker.

He figures his best playing weight will be around 265 pounds to use a blend of power and quickness to get to the quarterback as an edge rusher.

Jackson comes to a 49ers defensive line that already has 11 players with significant NFL experience. Jackson is ready to learn from those who have established themselves as professionals with Bosa and Arik Armstead at the top of the next.

“I wanted to text him a lot that night, draft night, and figure out, answers to the test,” Jackson said of Bosa. “You got that guy next to you who’s been doing it. He can learn from his brother, too.

“I definitely want to learn and stay behind those guys who’ve been doing it. Arik Armstead, he’s a freak, too.”
