Steph Curry Says He's ‘Gotta Be' NBA MVP, ‘Probably Won't Get It'

Steph says he's 'gotta be' MVP, but 'probably won't get it' originally appeared on NBC Sports Bayarea

Steph Curry is averaging 31.4 points, 5.9 assists, 5.5 rebounds and 1.2 steals per game this season.

Yet he almost assuredly will not win his third NBA MVP award, as the Warriors enter Wednesday's game against the Washington Wizards tied for ninth place in the Western Conference.

But Steph, are you the MVP this year?

"I mean -- I gotta be, I gotta be," the three-time NBA champion said on the podcast The Rex Chapman Show with Josh Hopkins. "I probably won't get it, but whatever.

"I like to be dramatic sometimes, so I'm just setting the table [laughter]."

Yours truly believes that in order for Steph to have a legitimate shot at capturing the hardware, the Warriors would need to vault up to the No. 6 seed in the West. And that is going to be very tough considering they are 3.5 games behind the Portland Trail Blazers with 14 games remaining (and the Blazers own the tiebreaker).

It all starts with taking care of business Wednesday night against Bradley Beal and the Washington Wizards in the final game of Golden State's road trip.

Then, the stage will be set Friday night for Steph to gain some major momentum as presumptive MVP favorite Nikola Jokic will be at Chase Center for a nationally televised matchup. If the three-time NBA champion delivers a monster performance and the Warriors beat the Denver Nuggets, the conversation could get very interesting.

Stay tuned.
