Report: Giants Bench Coach Hensley Meulens a Candidate for Twins Manager

SAN FRANCISCO -- The Giants nearly lost Hensley Meulens to the Yankees last October. A year later, Meulens may find himself in the midwest.

The Giants bench coach is a candidate for the open Minnesota Twins job, according to Jon Heyman of Fancred Sports. The Cincinnati Reds had previously announced that Meulens would interview for their opening this week.

Meulens, 51, has been an up-and-coming candidate since doing impressive work with Team Netherlands in the World Baseball Classic. He is viewed as having many of the skills necessary for a modern manager, and he speaks five languages, a huge plus in any clubhouse. The Giants moved Meulens to bench coach last offseason and he did well in the role, often a precursor to becoming a manager.

Meulens may have to compete with another former Giant for the Twins job. According to the Minneapolis Star Tribune, the Twins would also like to speak to Mark DeRosa.
