‘Taste of the NFL' Aims at Feeding Hungry Ahead of the Super Bowl

When you think of the Super Bowl, you usually think of one big party.

But there’s more. The “Taste of the NFL” is a nonprofit with the goal of helping to end world hunger across the country.

On Tuesday morning, hundreds were served a meal by NFL representatives and former players at St. Anthony’s in San Francisco.

So far, organizers say the effort has raised more than $22 million and nearly 200 million meals over 24 years to combat statistics like this one: One in six people in the United States struggles with hunger.

This year’s Taste of the NFL’s main event– named “Party with a Purpose” – will be held on Feb. 6, the eve of Super Bowl 50, at the Cow Palace, where 3,000 people are expected to show up for food, prize packages, and a chance to meet players and coaches.

The point is to raises money and awareness – getting help to local food banks and non-profits.
Retired Bay Area NFL players say people might not link pro-athletes to charity, and that’s why it’s so critical they came to St. Anthony’s.

“We were raised to always support people less fortunate than us,” said retired 49ers cornerback Eric Wright. “And that’s what these guys do.”

Added Morris Bradshaw, retired Raiders wide receiver: “There’s a lot going on the world other than the game.”
