Known for his role as Troy in the hit NBC comedy series "Community," Donald Glover is also popularly known by his musical stage name "Childish Gambino."
When Glover is not working alongside co-stars Danny Pudi, Joel McHale, and Chevy Chase, he is actively making music as the gambino and performing all across the country.
Glover took the name from an Internet Wu-Tang Clan name generator. Since then he has been moving quick to release music frequently since 2008, from mix tapes to EPs.
Not quite a veteran in the rap scene, Childish Gambino is no rookie either. Although he was involved with music for several years before his 2008 EP release, he has released one independent album every year since then.
And his first studio album "Camp" was released in November 2011 with Glassnote Records. His track release of "Freaks and Geeks" from the EP "Be Alone" had its video debut in February 2011, is almost at 9 million views on YouTube, and was used in an Adidas commercial featuring NBA star Dwight Howard.
Extensive touring has gained Childish Gambino recognition. He first made his way around in the IAMDONALD Tour hitting 23 cities in 33 days in 2011.
Later that year he stopped in 11 more cities during the Sign-Up Tour. As if two tours in 2011 weren't enough, he also toured with major artists during Rock the Bells Festival, which started in Los Angeles, came to the Bay Area, and ended on the East Coast. He was also a featured musical guest on Conan in November 2011.
His latest tour CAMP GAMBINO was a 20 show tour and went on that was initially planned for March and April of this year, although many shows were postponed due to a fractured foot he suffered in March. The new tour dates kicked it off on April 5th and will go on until August.
Childish Gambino will play the Fox Theatre in Oakland Thursday night.
