Target has a Bulls Eye Set on the Metreon

Target fans wanting to see some sort of clear sign that the big box retailer is finally ready to stop flirting with the City and finally enter into a full blown relationship may finally have their wish. Literally.

The Metreon is set to get a $30 million upgrade complete with a 22-foot illuminated Target sign, where the glass Metreon logo currently is on Fourth and Mission streets, according to the San Francisco Business Times.

The plan to open an 85,000-square-foot Target as the centerpiece of the revamped Metreon is scheduled to go before the San Francisco Redevelopment Board Tuesday.

The City's love-affair with Target took a bumpy turn when the store's political contributions were revealed. The store also began reportedly exploring options other than the Metreon.

The mall's owners, Westfield, also plan to open a new food court, triple the size of the current one, and welcome new shops along its street front, including La Boulange Bakery and Best of Burger.

Target has long been rumored to be moving into the troubled shopping center that has been looking for an anchor tenant to revitalize the Metreon for years. A plan to open New York City icon Tavern on the Green at the Metreon fell through earlier this year.
