Despite a lot of controversy when they first began popping up all around town, most commuters have come to appreciate the attractive JCDecaux bus shelters.

Bus riders will notice some needed improvement as they wait for public transportation in San Jose.

The end result includes a combination of solar lighting, new benches and trash cans, concrete pads for buses and expanded passenger loading pads.

Some of you may have already noticed the two dozen upgraded bus shelters along King Road in San Jose.

That kind of construction will continue for bus stops along Story Road, 18 stops in east San Jose between King and White roads, and another three stops in south San Jose.

VTA officials said they will attempt to create temporary stops for passengers during construction, but that is not always possible so riders should familiarize themselves with nearby stops.

The VTA estimates the total cost will be less than $188,000, which will be paid for by a Federal Transit Administration grant.  The upgrades will be complete by November.
