Ryan Murphy is to be commended for creating one of television's more creative/original shows, but he may be pushing his luck if he tries to recreate one of the greatest cult classics of all time.
There's nothing wrong with remaking films, but such projects should be chosen judiciously. Retooling great movies is a mistake that is made all too often, when what Hollywood should focus on is taking a mulligan on old movies that could've been great with a few easy tweaks.
But "Rocky Horror" is a different case all together. It's not a great film in the technical, but there's nothing that could be done to make people love it anymore. It is, in its own demented way, perfect.
The idea that Murphy could put together a cast like Tim Curry as Dr. Frank-n-Furter, Susan Sarandon as Janet, Barry Bostwick as Brad and Meatloaf as Eddie is beyond implausible. Part of what gave the film such staying power is that it helped launched both Sarandon and Meatloaf, making their performances seem eve more bizarre--you simply can't make that happen.
And try to imagine the mayhem if fans of the original who have been attending midnight screenings for years try to show up for a new version armed with toast, water, toilet paper hot dogs and rice. It would be mayhem.
