Summer Concert Series on Catalina Island

Descanso Beach Club is the balmy setting for live shows, cool beverages, Pacific waves.

AN ISLAND, LIVE TUNES... and general balmy-weathered relaxing, all enjoyed simultaneously, seems like a combo that might hail from the "too good to be true" files. And yet such a combo is nigh, on the horizon, and in California, too. The island in question? It's Catalina, with its storied hills, beautiful buffalo, historic Casino building, and the delightful Descanso Beach Club, which really sits along the sand next to the Pacific Ocean. The live tunes in the equation? They'll be a summery centerpiece, over a series of special nights at the beach club, with Smash Mouth revving up the jam and rocking the wave-adjacent getaway on Saturday, May 28. (Indeed, that's the Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend, if you're pondering a three-day diversion to the famous isle.) And the general balmy-weathered relaxing bit? That comes par for the course on the golf cart-laden island, which sits about 22 miles from mainland Los Angeles. The beach club ups that feeling with cabanas, ocean-facing loungers, perfectly placed palms, and dining/drinking choices at the ready.

THE CONCERT CALENDAR... continues during the summer of '16, with Toad the Wet Sprocket & Rusted Root on July 8, Coleman Hell on Aug. 12, and The Wailers rounding out the series on Saturday, Sept. 3 (yep, Labor Day Weekend). The Santa Catalina Island Company is presenting the concerts, by the by, and, for sure, you'll need to book passage in addition to securing your show ticket ahead of time (you can also reserve a cabana, if that's your preference). So what will you like better? Seeing a favorite act, the ocean, the sand, being on an island in summer, or the whole shebang? We'll wager most people'll vote for the final pick on the list. Your sand-covered, shoes-off info is this way, buffalo buffs.
