Snapchat Ahead of Instagram, Facebook in Apple's Top Apps of 2013

There's no denying we love using our phones for playing games and taking pictures, judging by Apple's list of most-downloaded apps of 2013.

The game Candy Crush Saga took the win for top free apps and top grossing apps on both iPhone and iPad, while Minecraft – Pocket Edition was the top paid app. Other gaming apps that made top 10 for both devices were Temple Run 2 and Despicable Me: Minion Rush in the free category, and Temple Run: Oz, Angry Birds Star Wars and Plants vs. Zombies in the paid category.

The photo and video messaging app, Snapchat, which reportedly turned down a $3-billion acquisition offer from Facebook, ranked No. 6, ahead of  No. 7 Instagram (owned by Facebook) and No. 8 Facebook. Snapchat is most popular among 18- to 29-year-olds in the U.S. and generates about 400 million photos a day, according to CNET. Instagram recently launched Instagram Direct, which allows private messaging features that Snapchat provides. The Twitter app (No. 13 on Apple's list) also launched a similar feature where users can attach photos in direct messages.

Although Twitter did not make Apple's top 10 free apps list, its video app, Vine, notched No. 4. Since its launch in January, the app has lined up more than 40 million users and sparked its own Vine Journalism Award, which was held at Twitter's New York Headquarters this year. The Tribeca Film Festival even created a new category called #6SECFILMS to challenge Vine users to create six-second films.

Since Apple stopped pre-loading the YouTube app from iPhones and iPads in 2012, it hasn't deterred users from downloading the apps back onto their iOS devices. The YouTube app is No. 2 on Apple's top apps of 2013 list.

The best of 2013 list also featured an "Editor's Choice" section, where Apple said it recognized the most innovative apps and entertaining games. The editor's choice for best iPhone app of the year went to Duolingo, a free app that helps you learn a new language through a series of mini-games. The editor's choice for best game of the year for iPhone was Ridiculous Fishing, a game about fishing with guns, chainsaws and toasters.

Apple also revealed its "App Trends of 2013," which included stylish photo editing, innovative kids apps, split-second video, fitness revolution, bite-sized news, and smart productivity.
