Tupac Hologram Performs at Coachella to Mixed Reviews

A hologram of the legendary rapper disturbed and entertained Coachella festival-goers

More than 15 years after his death, rapper Tupac Shakur hauntingly returned to southern California on Sunday night to perform through a hologram.

During the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Indio, Calif., Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre "resurrected" the Los Angeles native, who was murdered in 1996.

The rarity of such realistic hologram musicians, as well as the concept of bringing Shakur back to life, generated mixed reviews from disturbed music critics.

Under the direction of Dr. Dre, who envisioned bringing Shakur back to life, the hologram appeared to wear Shakur’s infamous “Thug Life” tattoos, jewelry and Timberland boots.

“It's very impressive in technical terms, but also very weird and sort of disturbing,” wrote Rolling Stone reporter Matthew Perpetua. “The audience seemed to love it, so don't be surprised if this opens up the possibility for further "performances" by dead stars at the festival.”

“What the [expletive] is up, Coachella?” the Shakur hologram said when it appeared on stage.

Shakur's likeness performed “Come With Me,” “Gangsta Party,” and “Hail Mary” alongside the living rappers.

Los Angeles Times writer Randall Roberts wrote that the hologram was “a red herring, unnecessary and ill advised.”

During the set, which also featured Eminem, the MCs also paid tribute to the late rapper Nate Dogg, who was pictured while Snoop Dogg performed “Ain’t No Fun.”

In light of Shakur’s "reincarnation," a parody Twitter account, Hologram Tupac, already garnered around 12,000 followers. The account mocked Shakur’s death, with remarks such as “I could have sworn I died with a shirt on.”
